What's In My Wallet?
A deeper dive
Typically the What’s In My Wallet section is at the bottom, but this week I wanted to provide a deeper dive into the why I carried 4 different credit cards for my trip in Calgary, Canada last week. Watch the video or read below for details.
Matthew
American Express Business Platinum: this is our newest card so we're looking to hit the minimum spend to get the 250,000 sign up bonus. We'll use this card as much as we can wherever American Express is accepted.
Capital One Savor: This amazing card is 4x back on dining with no annual fee, so it'll be a backup for whenever a restaurant doesn't accept American Express. Also it currently has 10x back on Uber, which we took to the airport. The no annual fee makes this card even sweeter.
Chase Sapphire Reserve: The main purpose of bringing this card is to use it for the rental car. This card has primary auto insurance should there be an accident. Also, the annual fee just hit, which means we have another $300 of travel credit to use which covers the rental car. Finally, we checked out the Chase Sapphire / Etihad Lounge at Dulles using this card's Priority Pass.
Capital One Venture X: Another back up card that earns 2x on everything. It also got us into the Dulles Capital One Lounge for us to grab take away items.
Sarah
American Express Gold: just in case Sarah and Matthew were split to pay for food.
Capital One Venture X: a backup card. It also help Sarah get into the lounge first as Matthew registered for Clear.
Each card we brought has no foreign transaction fees, which is crucial when going abroad (yes even to Canada). Having multiple banks and issuers also means if one card gets locked or lost, you have back-ups to use so you won’t be stuck in a foreign country.
For new subscribers, I’ve been ranking the most popular US personal credit cards on Instagram.
PNC Cash Rewards - Cashback | A decent earner of popular categories, 4% on gas to start.
PNC Points - Useless | Marketed as 4-7% points back depending on how much money you have with PNC. The problem is that it takes 5 points to redeem one cent.
Wyndham Earner - Niche | A decent hotel card with great discounts if you stay at Wyndham Hotels a lot.
Wyndham Earner+ - Niche | Has an annual fee that is covered by anniversary points. Plus now you can match to Caesars status.
US Bank Smartly - Cashback | A new card that could potentially earn you 4% back on everything.
IHG Traveler - Keeper | A no annual fee card that gives you the ability to book the 4th night free on points.
Our lineup for this week is below. See our rationale here just for newsletter subscribers like you.
Matthew: American Express Business Platinum | Capital One Venture X
Sarah: American Express Gold | Capital One Venture X
