The Power of Points:
Getting last-minute flights
Today, I want to show you guys how credit card points help with easing the burden to travel, even at the very last-minute. When I say last-minute, I literally mean booking a flight the night before. Read the details in the blog post or just get the overview below.
TL;DR: Instead of spending 16 hours and $100 on gas driving to/from Charleston, I booked my parents flights on points to avoid paying $1,000.
Key Takeaways:
Build up a bank of points so you can use it at a moment’s notice
Point booking don’t always follow the same pattern as cash bookings. Cash prices for last-minute flights can increase a lot, but point bookings might actually become cheaper.
Know your transfer partners, and make those frequent flier accounts early, so you don’t run into transfer delays
Transferrable points are gold. Because I had Amex and Chase points that can transfer to a variety of airlines, I had the flexibility and choice to go with cheaper point options.
For new subscribers, I’ve been ranking the most popular US personal credit cards on Instagram.
Chase Freedom Unlimited - Support | Earns 1.5% back on everything and 3% at dining and drug stores, so can help flesh out your Chase Trifecta, but doesn’t have the oomph of a Keeper card
Chase Freedom Rise - Intro | Good card for those getting into the credit card game to build credit
Chase Slate Edge - Intro | Wouldn’t generally recommend this card, but if you need a balance transfer and no rewards to limit spending, this could be helpful
American Express Green - Intro | $150 annual fee with a couple credits/perks that can help dip your toe into the Amex ecosystem. Need to get this card first to collect all the bonuses
American Express Gold - Keeper | $250 annual fee, but with $240 of credits, 4x on dining and restaurants, and access to lucrative offers. And, these Membership Rewards points can be transferred for flights.
Our lineup for this week is below. See our rationale here just for newsletter subscribers like you.
Matthew: Dicks’ Sporting Goods Score Rewards | World of Hyatt | American Express Gold
Sarah: American Express Gold | Capital One Venture X
