Mr. Beast Black Card incoming?

Things you should know Q1

Here’s a highlight of credit card news and points & miles updates!

Bank Program Updates

Chase

In some major changes, here’s what you should know about Chase rules:

  • You can now have the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred

  • Sapphire bonuses are now lifetime only - so if you’ve gotten the bonus before, you won’t be able to churn. (Some exceptions it seems - so you can try to apply and Chase will let you know if you qualify for a bonus before you pull the trigger and get a hard inquiry)

  • 5/24 is gone… or is it? Chase’s 5/24 rule in the past stated that they wouldn’t approve you for new credit cards if you’ve opened 5 personal cards within the past 24 month (2 years). But guess what - that was never an official, public rule and there were exceptions with co-branded cards. After the launch of the new Chase Sapphire Reserve, it seems more people are successfully getting Chase cards despite being above 5/24. This is great news, but there are also other datapoints showing people getting denied. At the end of the day, YMMV (your mileage may vary) depending on the total factors of your credit history.

Capital One

The big one here is the lounge access changes announced last year. Capital One has removed guest access on the Venture X card for both Capital One lounges and Priority Pass lounges. If you spend $75,000 on the card a year, then you can bring in 2 guests to Capital One lounges. There are also no more free AUs with lounge access. If you want to give them lounge access (no guests) you need to pay $125/year.

Step

Unlikely you’ve heard of Step and their black card, but you’ve probably heard about Mr. Beast. His company Beast Industries just acquired Step, which was a small fintech company using their products to help young people build credit and good habits. Personally, I felt the card had too many issues to be a good starter card, but we’ll see how Mr. Beast manages this new product - but as always be careful about hype.

New Cards

Lots of new cards that are out. We’re no longer updating the tier list, as we have a new ranking system coming up in the new year, stay tuend!

  • BILT - We have discussed these 3 new cards. As a reminder, they can be decent catch-all cards after you cut through all the marketing noise. Just use the card to pay for your rent and spend up to 75% on the card on other things.

  • Disney Inspire - A new premium Disney credit card launched giving more Disney-related perks and bonuses. I share this to remind you that co-branded cards are usually a trap - you can earn more points and perks from other cards. That said - if you live near a Disney park and regularly use some of the credits provided, it can be beneficial - but make sure it’s a net positive and not just a recouping of the annual fee.
