Kauai on Points (Hawaii Part 1)

Instead of spending over $14,000

Would you rather go to Hawaii and pay $5,000 for round-trip business or $1,800 for economy? And then while staying there for a week, would you rather spend $100 per night at a budget motel within walking to the beach or $900+ per night at a luxury beachfront resort?

How about… none of that.

Instead, this is what we did

  • Two United Polaris Business Class Seats IAD -> DEN -> LIH cost 270,000 points and $11.20. The cash price during time of booking was $5,584.18, economy was ~$2,000

  • Grand Hyatt Kauai (3 nights) cost 105,000 points. The base price was $2,628.14 at the time of booking, estimated value is closer to $3,000 because of resort fee waiver ($55/day), unlimited spa access, upgrade to partial ocean view, free meals at the club lounge, etc.

  • The Lodge at Kukui'ula (4 nights) cost 180,000 points. The base price was $6,397.37 a the time of booking, providing a 3.55 cpp valuation.

Credit Card Tier List Summary

For new subscribers, I’ve been ranking the most popular US personal credit cards on Instagram. If you want the full online list, you can purchase access. If you’re a college student, reach out for a 50% discount.

  1. Bank of America Alaska Airlines - Niche | Could be useful with its companion pass and lucrative points.

  2. Chase Southwest Plus - Niche | Very helpful in obtaining Southwest’s Companion Pass.

  3. Chase Southwest Premier - Niche | Middle of the road card that I’m not sure who its targeted for, but still helpful for Companion Pass.

  4. Chase Southwest Priority - Niche | If you fly Southwest a lot, you get a lot of perks and of course helps achieve Companion Pass.

  5. Chase Marriott Boundless - Keeper | For just a $95 annual fee you get a free night at a Marriot worth 35,000 points or less. You also get plenty of other benefits that more than makeup for the annual fee.

  6. Chase Marriott Bold - Harmful | Having this card hurts your Marriot strategy and BNPL for vacations rubs me the wrong way.
