Is the Chase Sapphire Reserve still worth it?
Let's evaluate some 2026 updates
I got the Chase Sapphire Reserve last month right before it got hit with a small devaluation.
The card comes with 2 $10 Doordash grocery credits per month which were easily redeemed through snacks at 7-11 for me. If I ever went over the $10 amount, it was only a few cents, plus could be covered by Doordash pickup credits.
Now I can’t do that - Doordash raised its pickup minimum to $20/order. So will I be spending more money to save money or totally ignore it? At the very least the credit has changed from a low-effort redemption to something that requires more thought for some users. See the full blog post for all the credits.
Another interesting update is the Points Boost partnership moving from United Airlines to American Airlines. On the surface this might not seem like a huge deal. But it highlights something important about credit card ecosystems:
Issuers can change partner relationships at any time. One year a redemption option might be heavily promoted, and the next year the structure can shift. That’s why I generally focus more on flexible transfer partners rather than relying on any one redemption feature.
Weekly Credit Card Tip #58
Finally, Chase added a perk to its $75,000 spend threshold each year - you now get Hyatt Explorist status - which doesn't honestly provide much, just a better upgrade change to a better room. But instead of doing that, you could spend $60,000 on the World of Hyatt business credit card. Plus in doing so, you'll actually earn the milestone awards that come with the card like free night awards and club access awards. So not really a huge add.
So is the card worth it?
As you probably guessed - it depends. Will you use the other credits easily to recoup the annual fee? Are the lounge perks, travel insurance, and other perks valuable to you?
At the very least, getting the card in the first year for the large sign-up bonus can be an easy way to test out the card and be rewarded for it → you can always downgrade to the Chase Sapphire Preferred the following year after doing the double dip hack. (Use the $300 travel credit in the 2nd year before downgrading the card).
