Forget cent per point value

Go on that trip

Ever get caught up on the cent per point (CPP) rat race? Where influencers brag about how they got 10x value from their points to go on an amazing international trip.

And so maybe you’ve been paralyzed before - not wanting to use your points for a “low-value” redemption. You’re trying to save your points for a good value business class trip.

I’m telling you now - just book the trip anyways. I did it, and I don’t regret it one bit. Your points will devalue while you wait, so create those key memories now.

I recently went to Tampa with the family on points and credits and will break it down for you - how I used points, even for “bad” redemptions. But you don’t see any sad faces on our vlog below!

Here’s the breakdown

Turkish Airlines - 21,000 points IAD-TPA for 2 on United Economy (normally $329 - 1.5 cpp)
United - $466.92 from United Travel Bank using the American Express Platinum Airline Incidental Hack
Hyatt - 100,000 points for 4 nights at Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach Resort & Spa (normally $1,200 - 1.2 cpp0

As you can see, we use a lot of points to save only ~$300 (because if we redeemed the points for cash, we would have gotten $1,210). And yes, those points could have gotten us business class flights instead worth thousands of dollars more.

But we have the points from signing up for credit cards and those points will just lose value if we don't use them. But more importantly, we wanted to create memories with Noah and take a relaxing vacation. Points helped us fuel that - they shouldn't hold us back.

Weekly Credit Card Tip #33

To calculate cent per point (CPP) you take the cash price (what you would have paid) the subtract any cash you did pay (e.g., taxes and fees). Then divide that by the points used and finally multiple by 100. Anything below 1 cpp would be better of being purchased on your card and then redeemed for statement credit.
