American Express spends a lot of money marketing how much value you can squeeze out of their Platinum card every year. $3,500+, they say. And honestly, that number is real… if you know what you're doing.

Most cardholders don't get anywhere close. Not because the value isn't there, but because they're not timing things right and they're stopping one step short on retention calls.

Two things I want to put on your radar this week.

  1. Your application timing is leaving money on the table.

Amex credits are calendar-year based. They reset January 1st, not on your card anniversary. That one detail unlocks what I call the triple-dip: apply in December, use credits for three separate calendar years, and cancel within 30 days of your second annual fee to get it fully refunded. Three years of credits. One annual fee of $895. The math is hard to argue with.

  1. Retention calls are step one, not the whole game.

Most people call for a retention offer, get nothing, and either keep the card out of habit or cancel. Both moves leave points on the table. When Amex stonewalls you, downgrade instead. You might pick up a bonus just for switching. Then wait a few months. Upgrade offers come around, often with bigger bonuses than you would have gotten from retention. I did this with my Gold card last year and walked away with 45,000 bonus points for a card I was already planning to keep.

There's a lot more in the full breakdown, the gift card play for expiring credits, the CLEAR hack, airline incidental tricks, popup jail, and how patience with mailers landed one of my clients a 300K point targeted offer.

I just shared all these tricks in a webinar this past weekend that most of you missed. Don’t miss out on even more tips and strategies at FTU Dallas in a few months!

Weekly Credit Card Tip #54

You want more than what I said above?? Read the full blog post! But also, remember most banks will prorate the annual fee refund if you cancel/downgrade after 30 days. So don’t beat yourself up if you miss that timeline.
